Here is some information that will help you get to know us better:

First Baptist Church of Fairfield was formally organized September 18, 1876, with 12 charter members. It has remained open and active in this community throughout all these years and currently has its 25th pastor and an active membership of about 180 representing more than 100 families.

Our mission statement expresses the three-fold purpose of our existence as a church: To win people to a personal allegiance to Jesus Christ as Savior and Lord; To train in Christian living and the development of Christian character; and To help spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ throughout the world. Everything we do must be directed toward fulfillment of one of these goals.

First Baptist Church is autonomous and is answerable to no ecclesiastical body except by its own consent. It manages its own internal organization and regulates its own affairs. It is, however, affiliated with the Kennebec Baptist Association (KBA), American Baptist Churches of Maine (ABCOM), American Baptist Evangelicals (ABE), and American Baptist Churches of the United States of America (ABCUSA).

We are evangelical in our theology, which means we believe in the triune God -- Father, Son, and Holy Spirit as One; we believe Jesus Christ died to redeem a lost mankind; we believe in the resurrection of the dead made possible by the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the first fruits; and we believe in the ultimate triumph of Christ over sin and death, resulting in eternal life in Heaven with God for all believers.

As Baptists we also adhere to the following Baptist distinctives:

  • The Lordship of Jesus Christ - He is the Head of the Church and the only Mediator between God and man.

  • The Supremacy of the Scriptures - They are our guide and the final authority for our faith and conduct.

  • The Priesthood of Believers - Any person who accepts Christ may come directly into the Presence of God in prayer and worship.

  • Believer's Baptism - Baptism by immersion is only for those who believe in and follow Christ and who have shown evidence of spiritual change brought as a result of their faith.

  • Regenerate Church Membership - Only those who are baptized believers and can give evidence of a personal experience with Jesus Christ may unite with our church.

  • Separation of Church and State - The state should protect all religious groups and favor none.

  • Religious Freedom - Every person is responsible to God for his/her religious beliefs. Neither the state nor the church has the right to dictate beliefs.

  • Independence of the Local Church - Each local congregation is self-governing.

  • Evangelization of the World - We practice the Great Commission to go into all the world and preach the Gospel, as evidenced by our mission suport programs.
